Classification Societies and manufacturers
The Classification Societies are non-governmental organizations or non-profit professional groups, with the aim of promoting the safety of human life at sea and property (vessels and platforms), as well as the protection of the natural marine resources. Vessels or marine structures are classified according to their condition and their design. These are designed to ensure a level of stability, safety, environmental impact, etc. Nations require vessels or marine structures sailing under their flag to meet certain standards; in most cases these standards are met if the vessel has a certificate of compliance from a member of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) or another approved Classification Society.
